Principles of Biomedical Informatics PDF
By:Ira J. Kalet, PhD
Published on 2013-09-26 by Academic Press

This second edition of a pioneering technical work in biomedical informatics provides a very readable treatment of the deep computational ideas at the foundation of the field. Principles of Biomedical Informatics, 2nd Edition is radically reorganized to make it especially useable as a textbook for courses that move beyond the standard introductory material. It includes exercises at the end of each chapter, ideas for student projects, and a number of new topics, such as: • tree structured data, interval trees, and time-oriented medical data and their use • On Line Application Processing (OLAP), an old database idea that is only recently coming of age and finding surprising importance in biomedical informatics • a discussion of nursing knowledge and an example of encoding nursing advice in a rule-based system • X-ray physics and algorithms for cross-sectional medical image reconstruction, recognizing that this area was one of the most central to the origin of biomedical computing • an introduction to Markov processes, and • an outline of the elements of a hospital IT security program, focusing on fundamental ideas rather than specifics of system vulnerabilities or specific technologies. It is simultaneously a unified description of the core research concept areas of biomedical data and knowledge representation, biomedical information access, biomedical decision-making, and information and technology use in biomedical contexts, and a pre-eminent teaching reference for the growing number of healthcare and computing professionals embracing computation in health-related fields. As in the first edition, it includes many worked example programs in Common LISP, the most powerful and accessible modern language for advanced biomedical concept representation and manipulation. The text also includes humor, history, and anecdotal material to balance the mathematically and computationally intensive development in many of the topic areas. The emphasis, as in the first edition, is on ideas and methods that are likely to be of lasting value, not just the popular topics of the day. Ira Kalet is Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology, and of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education, at the University of Washington. Until retiring in 2011 he was also an Adjunct Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, and Biological Structure. From 2005 to 2010 he served as IT Security Director for the University of Washington School of Medicine and its major teaching hospitals. He has been a member of the American Medical Informatics Association since 1990, and an elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics since 2011. His research interests include simulation systems for design of radiation treatment for cancer, software development methodology, and artificial intelligence applications to medicine, particularly expert systems, ontologies and modeling. Develops principles and methods for representing biomedical data, using information in context and in decision making, and accessing information to assist the medical community in using data to its full potential Provides a series of principles for expressing biomedical data and ideas in a computable form to integrate biological, clinical, and public health applications Includes a discussion of user interfaces, interactive graphics, and knowledge resources and reference material on programming languages to provide medical informatics programmers with the technical tools to develop systems

This is a unique, extensively illustrated dictionary of terms, people, events, and dates spanning the entire history of medicine. It is a monumental work of scholarship totaling some 700 double-column pages with a large number of rare and exceptional illustrations from many original sources painstakingly compiled over years of far-searching inquiry involving more than 5,000 books and hundreds of journals. It is a major resource of hard-to-find information about notable medical figures, instruments, conditions, procedures, and dates and a storehouse of captivating anecdotes and background material. The book contains a wealth of material for concise historical introductions to a broad range of subjects and is the sine qua non authority on both well and little known facts of medical history. With this single volume-an unprecedented tour de force representing more than 7,000 hours of exhaustive research-clinicians and researchers from all fields of medicine can quickly and easily find authoritative, detailed definitions and descriptions, with dates, of medical terms and of the people and events contributing to the development of medicine from earliest times to the present day. The entries range widely from such as abacterial pyuria to zygote, including Latin and Greek origins of terms, compact biographies with dates, eponymic information of all kinds, and rarely seen drawings and photographs of antique medical instruments and little-known conditions.

This book aims to connect and integrate classical acupuncture therapy and contemporary medicine. Based on updated reviews and systematic analyses, the meridians are actually systems of physiological and pathological reflexes in the body, and acupuncture therapy is a type of reflexotherapy. The systems methodology, together with the authors’ clinical expertise of 40 years, is applied to raise the reproducibility of effectiveness in treating various indications of acupuncture, especially intractable cases. Incisive and concrete theory and technique descriptions, a novel systems approach, and many case studies are included.

Homoeopathy Or Orthodox Medicine PDF
By:Pal Dragos
Published on 2006-03-01 by Wachstumstrend F.

The pursuit of the symptom within orthodox medicine has intensified in recent years, causing a self-perpetuating escalation of the costs involved. Technological progress has made it increasingly easy for symptoms to be repressed. The consequence of this repression is the incessant production of further symptoms. This vicious circle poses a growing risk to patients and makes it increasingly difficult to predict the outcome of treatment. In the worst case scenario, this vicious circle can even end in death. The strategy of orthodox medicine is based on an abstract concept of man which was created in the modern era but is no longer tenable in our postmodern times. Homeopathy calls for a different concept of man. A disctinction must be made between the constitution und the symptoms; the illness itself and the expression thereof, i.e. the symptom, must not be confused. The approach to problem-solving with homeopathic remedies also differs fundamentally to the way in which chemically-produced substances are used to bring the body into line. In the future it will be up to each and every individual to decide for themselves how to respond to the body's cries for help (illnesses) in the context of their own unique nature: Whether homeopathy or orthodox medical assistance is the more appropriate option under the given circumstances. These three essays are intended to help you with this decision. They explore the relationship between homeopathy and orthodox medicine from various perspectives and consider the crucial question of a concept of man appropriate to our times. The right decision as to homeopathy or orthodox medicine may just save your life.

Holism and Complementary Medicine PDF
By:Vincent Di Stefano
Published on 2006-04-01 by Allen & Unwin

The return to holistic therapies is one of the most important developments in health over the past two decades. With preventative medicine being taken more seriously by conventional health practitioners, and the increasing popularity of natural and complementary therapies among consumers, it is clear that a holistic approach will be integral to health care in the future. Holism and Complementary Medicine offers a systematic overview of traditional healing practices, the development of the Western biomedical model from the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to the present, and the holistic philosophy which is the basis of complementary and alternative medicine in the West. The book explores the differences between holistic and conventional biomedical traditions and approaches, acknowledging the strengths of each. It also addresses key practice issues, examining the role holistic principles have to play in today's health system and explaining their place in the therapeutic relationship. Holism and Complementary Medicine is an accessible guide for students, practitioners and anyone interested in the origins and core principles of natural therapies. 'This scholarly exploration of the conceptual evolution of holistic medicine is a fascinating read. Di Stefano is to be congratulated for his articulate insights into healing relationships and how our health paradigms enhance or inhibit our understanding of health and disease.' - Joseph Pizzorno, ND, President Emeritus, Bastyr University 'This is a magnificent read for students of natural and complementary medicine, as well as health professionals and lay public who have often wondered where the movement towards holism in medicine began and is headed.' - Paul Orrock, Head of the School of Natural and Complementary Medicine, Southern Cross University '. . . brings together many threads that link the health of body, mind and society, drawing richly from a larger corpus of intellectual inquiry into history, philosophy, and human endeavor, including clinical medicine.' - Bruce Barrett MD PhD, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, University of Wisconsin, Madison
